The material is growing

Matter, the New York-based design institution run by Jamie Gray, has unveiled its new Matter Loft space upstairs in its storefront on Broome Street. Artist Laila Gohar helped inaugurate the space, which designed an interactive food installation with artfully arranged cauliflower florets, generous logs of mozzarella, and a rainbow assortment of hard-boiled eggs. As for the gallery’s specialty – furniture and lighting – the space offered a lot of inspiration with the launch of Matter Made MMXXII, with new designs from Matter newcomer Jamie Wolfond, Ana Kraš, Faye Toogood and Gray himself. The return of fairs

Not so long ago, the Javits Center in New York City served as the site for a field hospital and, later, mass vaccinations. With the return of NYCxDesign this fall, the exhibition center has resumed its normal programming, simultaneously hosting the BDNY, ICFF and Wanted Design fairs. AD PRO editor-in-chief Lila Allen was part of a jury of editors, which determined the top winners in the exterior design, accessories and more categories. Highlights included the wood and mango leather furniture by Brooklyn designer Bowen Liu, the sophisticated Ornare exhibition of Brazilian furniture and Armadillo’s new Declare rug collection with Studio Gray. Opiary won the Best in Show award for its plant-based and outdoor-ready designs. –THE

Lights off at Lambert & Fils

It might seem counterintuitive for Montreal lighting brand Lambert & Fils to celebrate Design Week entirely by candlelight. But the company’s latest project, Palais des Glaces, a collaboration with another Montreal studio Atelier Zébulon Perron, aims to bring people together in mysterious ways. A year after the opening of its Tribeca showroom by Lambert & Fils, the storefront space is filled with sculptural candelabras, a scaffold-like metal structure and a multitude of mirrors to create a strange and brooding environment people find themselves in after separation. “The idea is to modify spatial perceptions,” explains Perron. –Hannah martin

The new Soho Home showroom

On Thursday morning, AD PRO Editor-in-Chief Lila Allen stopped by the opening of Soho Home Studio in the city’s Meatpacking District. A showroom concept, the outpost features a rotating selection of products and artwork from Soho House members, in addition to pieces from the company’s own line. But, unlike the showrooms of years past, this one is meant to be used: the public is invited to have informal meetings over coffee or juice, and to test the products on the spot. interior, no membership is required. –THE
