Construction on the Melksham House site is underway as the facility begins to take shape

Construction work is now underway on Melksham House, which will see the historic building become a workspace and multi-purpose community facility in the heart of the city.

Formal construction work began on Monday and is being carried out by Beard Construction. This follows a period of preparatory work that has taken place at the site over the past six weeks.

Work is expected to be complete by winter 2023. Efforts are being made to keep disruption to a minimum and the ongoing work will not impact the recently opened Melksham Community Campus.

At the end of 2021, Wiltshire Council Cabinet approved total funding of £4.8 million to renovate and redevelop the Melksham House site, as well as demolish the Blue Pool.

When complete, the renovations will provide flexible offices and meeting rooms, and the community hall at the rear of the building will be restored to create multi-purpose activity spaces.

Improvements will include modern sustainable technologies such as LED lighting, air-source heat pumps, photovoltaics and electric vehicle charging stations. The planning permission was granted in October 2021.

Advisor Phil Alford, Cabinet Member for Strategic Assets, said: “Following the truly successful opening of the Melksham Community Campus, we are delighted to see another key Melksham project gain momentum. We believe the result will prove to be a valuable and flexible space for the business community and residents in an accessible central location, just off campus, which attracts many people to this area.

“In this time of national uncertainty due to the cost of living and rising inflation, projects like this will support the local economy and help it thrive, as outlined in our business plan missions. business.

“We know this particular location has seen a lot of building work and activity over the past two years, so together with our construction partners we are very careful to keep disruption to the absolute minimum for the local population.”

The the demolition process began in March earlier this year, and they started preparatory work in July before starting full construction now, two months later.

Wiltshire Council will continue to work with Melksham City Council to ensure the future use of sites such as the old Blue Pool and library locations is part of an overall strategy for the town.

Efforts will be made to minimize disruption to residents and the ongoing works will not impact the Melksham Community Campus.
