SIKESTON, Mo. (KFVS) – Construction jobs are readily available throughout the state of Missouri, while hiring of workers is at an all-time low.
According to the Associated General Contractors of America, 80% of Midwestern contractors report difficulty hiring artisans on time, which is causing them to start looking at the next generation of workers.
“We’re having a hard time finding jobs,” said State Senator Jason Bean, who was at the Three Rivers College campus in Sikeston to support an effort to attract more young people to the construction industry.
“Statewide. And I’m not just talking about the construction industry, but pretty much all industries. We need manpower, period, ”said Jason Bean.
Building My Future gives students the opportunity to spend a day in the construction industry testing equipment and meeting employers.
“They have the opportunity to see hands-on career-related activities that they can engage in immediately after high school with some training,” Bean said.
Oak Ridge guidance counselor Rhonda McClanahan said she has seen a lot of students take an interest in the construction industry.
“There are a lot of opportunities. And I personally think the earlier they are introduced to things and have the experience of seeing what the job or career can do for them, the better off they will be to move forward, ”said McClanahan.
While Oak Ridge senior Jeremiah Hamilton said he currently has a construction job but remains open to other opportunities.
“Definitely take a few lessons out here. You know how to gain new experience and discover new things to do. Because that’s why I came here, ”Hamilton said.
Delta High School student Wesley Borneman said he sees his future here.
“There is a lot of money in construction. It’s really fun. And it’s a little better than spending 4, 5 or 8 years in a college dorm or classroom when you’re already working here, ”Borneman said.
“To organize these kinds of events, show the kids what’s out there, what’s out there in the world,” said Bean, “Increase their interest, let them see for themselves what they may want to do.”
The Build My Future High School exhibit will be held in Springfield and St. Charles, Missouri in April 2022.
